The Great Mouse Detective

Today my sister and me have dug out our old video player and some of the videos we watched when we were kids. The first being The Great Mouse Detective.
This is a parody of Sherlock Holmes set in the world of mice. The enemy being a large rat called Ratigan.
This was a great film when I was a kid and I loved watching it again. There are bits that used to make us laugh aswel as those that scared us. But I don't think it's one to show off about now. Deffinately watching it again soon though.

Se7en

Normally this would not be the kind of film I would watch. But I think the presence of Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman may have swayed me into watching it.
From the build up and the description, "sinister and gripping mystery-thriller about a pair of homicide detectives who must solve a puzzling series of horrific murders based on the seven deadly sins", I prepared myself for a gruesome account of murder and graphics. And so in that way I was both pleased and dissappointed that it wasnt as bad as I had thought it was going to be.
Non-the-less, a good film with a great ending I think. If a little bit of a let down.

It's Complicated

This a funny, grown up comedy about Jane (Meryl Streep), who starts to have an affair with her ex-husband.
All three main actors are brilliant in this really funny film, Meryl Streep especially is great. But my favourite character is Harley (John Krasinski), the fiance of Jane's eldest daughter. He finds out about the affair and has some of the funniest lines/actions/looks.
The story is funny but there was a thought in my head that said I might have seen the best bits in the trailer, luckily there was plenty more.
I will deffinately be looking for this when it is released on DVD.

Trauma

I get the feeling that I wasn't paying complete attention whilst watching this film because there are bits of the story that I'm not clear on. So I will have to watch it again sometime soon.
Quite an interesting story really. When Ben wakes from a coma to find he was in a car crash and his wife was killed, he trys to rebuild his life but soon starts to lose his grip on what is real and what isn't.
The three main characters are played well, and the film is well made. But something just doen't click with this film. There seems to be some element missing.

Up In The Air

I wasn't sure what I was going to think about this film before I went to see it. And to be honest, it wasn't brilliant.
The two main females in the film did quite well, but George Clooney wasn't stretched. I suppose the concept could of worked but there didn't seem to be much of a story to it and I found myself a little bored from about half way through when I realised that there probably wasn't going to be much more. It didn't even seem to get much better towards the end unlike some films that are boring in the middle.
So a bit of a dissapointment from a big film that has been hyped up a little recently.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

Almost one of the modern classics. This follows the three Baudelaire children, after their parents are killed in a house fire, they are placed in the care of the Count Olaf. Then occurs a series of the most unfortunate events.
The children in this are pretty good and Jim Carrey does the crazy characters very well. Timothy Spall, Billy Connolly and Meryl Streep also have great parts to play.
But some how, I couldn't help but feel that something was missing from this film. Although it is enjoyable to watch, it doesn't rank as well as I thought it would.

Another Country

This is one of my favourite films of all time. Guy Bennett (Rupert Everett) and Tommy Judd (Colin Firth) are attending public school in the 1930s.
The film follows Bennett as his homosexuality and unwillingness to play by the rules, eventually piont him Eastwards towards communist Russia.
Rupert Everett and Colin Firth are great in this film. Made in 1984, they look really young compared to how I am used to seeing them. (Born in 1991, recognising actors and films only in the last 8 years or so I suppose).
This is a film I will always come back to and I would definately recommend it.

Then She Found Me

This is a great and heartfelt film. There are some good moments that made me smile or laugh, but the bulk of the movie is touching and has themes that alot of people may be able to connect with.
All four of the main actors are great in their respective parts and I think this helps to find the wit and heartbreak within the film. Helen Hunt especially shines in this film, playing the main character, April Epner, who is going through a divorce and who has a desire for a child, as well directing.
There are slow parts but the story is touching enough to make up for it.

Unconditional Love

I cannot believe this was made in 1999, premiered in 2003 then went straight to DVD. Yes the story is very rediculous but overall it has lots of laughs and I really enjoyed watching it.
The most unlikely of characters team up to go on the wild, impulsive, adventure of their lives. Kathy Bates plays the main character, but I think Meredith Eaton has the best character, a fiesty dwarf, and some of the best lines. For example, "Nobody messes with a dwarf in a red coat".
There are also great characters that only have small parts. Julie Andrews has two scenes in which see bursts into song. And Barry Manilow shares a song with the cast in the final scene.
I found this DVD in a clearance sale and am so glad i bought it.

I am starting to feel as though all the films I have blogged about, have been ones I think are great, so I might now have to start and sit through some that aren't quite as exciting or interesting.

Defiance

A great story about a community of Jewish people avoiding being captured by the Nazi's. Based on true events, this story was all the more moving.
Although not a film i would normally have chosen to watch, it wasn't as I thought it would be.
Parts of it were a little slow but the end made up for all that.
Not everyones idea of a film to relax to but a good film.

The English Patient

I have just this minute finished watching 'The English Patient' and all I can say is, why haven't I seen this before?!
I have heard this film being mentioned as great as well as it winning the Best Picture Oscar in 1997. But I didn't really know what to expect. I had never heard anything about the story before and whilst watching, I became totally hooked.
This is a story set just before and during world war 2, in the desert in Northern Africa. A story of love, and what it's like to lose love. Ralph Fiennes and Kristen Scott Thomas are simply brilliant.
I was in tears at the end, I may even have found a new film to slot into my top ten.

Sherlock Holmes

Before seeing this film, having seen the trailer, I thought it was goin to be more Hollywood action movie than traditional Sherlock Holmes. But, I was pleasently suprised.
Robert Downey Jr. was an impressive Holmes and Jude Law made a good Watson.
The story was exciting, and I was pleased to find that although it was a long film, I wasn't bothered, and wasn't bored at all.
All together, a good film I liked alot more than I thought I would. I may even go and watch it again.

Changeling

A moving true story about when a mother loses her son in 1928 Los Angeles. Because this film is based on a true story, it probably made me cry even more.
There were parts when i had to drop everything else I was doing so that I could really concentrate on what was being said. For this reason, Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich can only be talked of as being great in this film.
This is a really great film that I will have to recommend and one I will be watching again soon.

Doubt

Set in 1964, this follows a nun a she confesses to seeing a priest abuse a black school student. I like the way this film is put together as most of the dialog is only spoken by the three main characters.
Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams are more than capable of pulling this off with ease. Each character is well established, which makes this a touching and dramatic film.
When I first saw interviews of various people talking about this film, I naively thought they were just fitting into their profession, but now that I have actually seen it, I would have to agree with them because there is alot you could talk about with this film. Having come from stage to screen, it has built character itself. (oh no, now I'm doing it)
A great film that I will have to recommend.
P.S. The unusually high number of posts I have made today is due to me having to catch up after christmas.

The Last Legion

This wouldn't normally be my kind of film. Constant battles and sword fights aren't watch I would choose to watch. But maybe the prescience of Colin Firth and Thomas Sangster have altered my view slightly in this film.
The story is ok and the acting (like in all war films set in deep history, in my opinion anyway), is as can be expected.
So I guess this can be classed as a film on the good side of films I won't be watching again for some time.

Nine

I have a bit of a thing for musicals so i couldn't wait to see this one. Although it starts off a little slowly, it does get better.
I love the idea of this story, Guido Contini has all these women in his life, fighting for his attention. And the majority of the songs are quite good. But when I came out of the cinema, I couldn't really remember what the whole story was.
But inspite of this, I did like this film and could watch it again. The actors were great and this film is a chance to see them in a slightly different light to that we are used to.

One Fine Day

I watched this film on a Sunday afternoon on the TV, when i had nothing else to do. And I think that is where this film belongs. It's not exciting or thrilling, but it's a nice story for a rainy day when you have exhusted all other options.
Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney work well together, and the children are quite cute. But that does not detract from the fact that this is a film that is a little boring.
But like I said, good for a rainy Sunday afternoon, perhaps while your doing the housework.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

A lighter take on Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' and a version I would probably prefer to watch.
It is much more witty than traditional versions and the Muppets make it alot more enjoyable. While at the same time, the story isn't altered.
Having not watched this in many years I forgot that Michael Caine was in this film, a great addition. The Muppets are definately the best characters in this film however. Lines and actions that just make the film.
This is a great film that is a classic around christmas.
